Phonics and Reading at Ivanhoe
Reading is an extremely important life skill. Children who read regularly, or who are read to regularly, have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds!
More importantly, reading gives children many skills that enable them to become independent, life-long learners.
At Ivanhoe we teach early reading through the Read, Write Inc phonics programme. We also teach reading skills through whole class reading, individual reading and in comprehension sessions in each year group. We use Pathways to Read to support this.
We strongly encourage parents to read daily at home to your children to help them develop their reading skills.
At Ivanhoe we use Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) to give your child the best possible start with their literacy. See below for guidance on how the RWI programme works together with some useful links. Mrs Matthews and Ms Pendlebury are the Reading Leadesr, so if you have any questions about RWI, contact school who can refer you to them.
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at Ivanhoe, we will continue teaching RWI to children beyond the age of 7 if necessary, as we use a stage not age approach.
In Upper KS2, we use the Fresh Start programme to continue to support those children who may need it. This is a similar approach to RWI but more age appropriate.
